The exhibition Tradition and Innovation. Italy and Cina was the first of three events developed by La Triennale di Milano, in agreement with Shanghai Expo Group, on behalf of the Government of the Republic of China. The initiative is part of a comprehensive program that includes the use of the building of the Italian Pavilion at Expo 2010 in Shanghai, now reused as a platform for a cultural exchange between Italy and China. The exhibition was organized by David Rampello and Studio Cerri & Associati, the latter also the author of the exhibition design. Divided into 7 thematic sections, it offers a glimpse of the historical, artistic and cultural Italian heritage, illustrating the links between the past and the present, handcrafts and industry, art and manufacturing excellence. The more than 500,000 visitors were greeted at the entrance by a bronze copy of Michelangelo's David, placed in juxtaposition with the reconstruction of the scenic frontage of Palladio's Olimpico Theatre in Vicenza, an authentic gateway to the exhibition. As a backdrop to the two great icons, there was the modern Italia tapestry: a valuable piece of fabric work inspired by the shape of the Peninsula. Closing the exhibition was the section described as La Penisola della Luce, organized by Gian Piero Brunetta, dedicated to Italian history and culture as seen through scenes and fragments from the great Italian cinematic tradition.
