SUPPORTI TATTILI AL WAYFINDING
BY DARIA SHMITKO
FOR ISIA URBINO
The thesis investigates the problem of
accessibility within the graphical representation of space and takes
the form of an tactile artefact accessible to the blind and visually
impaired. The goal of the project is to make the geography of an
area available both in economic as well as content terms, thanks to
the combination of a low cost printing technique and a specific
representative approach. The project consists of a set of tactile
maps and a research programme that documents the design
process and the first phase of testing with blind people. The
technique of relief printing (the Minolta process) does not require
the production of a matrix: this characteristic allows a reduction in
production time and costs. The representative approach is based
on a gradual progression in detail, starting with a general plan of
the Italian territory and arriving at a detailed scale of urban areas.
The succession of tactile references between one map and
another allows a correct perception magnification.
