SULLA VIA DELLA SETA

FOR AZIENDA SPECIALE PALAEXPO
Creating an idealized version of the journey along the Silk Road, the itinerary of the exhibition organized at the Palaexpo in Turin winds through artefacts and original documents, photographs and representations, but also reconstructions of the original habitats. In every part of the exhibition, the use of materials, colours and graphic elements is designed to recall the atmosphere of landscapes and places visited by explorers and merchants of the time: Xi-an (the wood panelling on the walls recalls the wooden Chinese architectural construction techniques), Turfan (the earthy colours and green space evoke the charm of the oasis), Samarkand (the golden plates and lacquered panels of the display are matched to the colours of the domes of the mausoleums), Baghdad (a graphic reconstruction of the palm tree, a symbol of man’s predestined goal, dominates the city walls of the mosque). The journey ends with the reconstruction of the arrival at the Western end of the trip – the ports of Venice and Genoa - where between the second half of the thirteenth century and the first half of the fourteenth century the fabrics made in workshops in Asia arrived together with the necessary raw materials to make Italian silk. In order to evoke the atmosphere of this market between East and West, the room is entirely covered with precious silks in iridescent shades.
