The design of the Sphere collection of manhole covers and gratings stems from research looking at the stories hidden in the little tracks that can be found in public places – such as the tracks of birds in the park, or the traces of a tyre pattern. From observing these traces the result is a set of abstract decorative motifs, which add an aesthetic and conceptual component to products that are normally considered to be secondary in terms of design. A second element developed by the design comes from comparing the quality of ductile cast iron to lamellar cast iron, a variant of the material more commonly used for the manufacture of this category of technical elements. Unlike in the classic lamellar structure, the graphite in ductile cast iron is presented in nodules in the form of spheroids, and these have better mechanical properties and more especially remarkable ductility, or flexibility. In the case of the Sphere collection, the use of ductile iron has enabled the development of a range of walking surfaces studied with regard to the positioning and functionality of the different gratings and covers. Each surface bears a lightly embossed specific design, which is evocative of a gentle poetic narrative and at the same time consistent with the specific situation in which it is to be used.

technologies
From the initial sketches and drawings the design stage is approached using three-dimensional technology, where issues and/or improvements are analyzed. Following this, the stresses to which the products will be subjected are simulated, the final design is developed, the prototypes are made in the foundry and then the road test is undertaken to gauge the reactions of the prototypes once installed.
