The essay by Simon Garfield is a comprehensive compendium of the history of typography, from Gutenberg to the present day and which has over a hundred thousand fonts and typefaces, each one examined in detail together with its varying fortunes. Fonts, as the author points out, are not just the simple drawing of letters of the alphabet but a real depiction of emotions. Almost unknown until twenty years ago, thanks to the advent of computer technology today they are part of the common cultural heritage, often recognizable and recognized and sometimes even having become universal icons within the collective imagination. Sei proprio il mio Typo clearly reconstructs the steps that led to fonts emerging from a world reserved for a small circle of craftsmen to enter the common iconographic heritage. The theoretical / analytical text is enriched by a series of amusing anecdotes about the design of words ("On the campus every poster, every label on every drawer was beautifully hand-written. I decided to enroll on a calligraphy course. I learned to distinguish the characters with and without serifs, varying the amount of space between different letter groups, and I understood what makes great typography great (...) ten years later, Steve Jobs – that was his name - designed the first Macintosh computer, a machine with something completely new: a wide range of fonts").
