Ford uses 3D printing technology to significantly reduce development time and increase the number of prototypes thereby allowing designers and engineers the opportunity to experiment with a greater number of models that would otherwise incur higher costs, special equipment and a longer manufacturing time using traditional processes. In fact in some cases several hundred versions of the same element are made. In order to turn an idea into a prototype, the Ford design team starts from paper drawings converted into physical objects by clay modelling artists, either scaled-down or life-size. At the same time, digital sculptors create a computerized CAD model. Following this, the Rapid Prototype Team create moulded components in 3D with different techniques using elements in digitized clay, or on the basis of CAD models.
