Lecco Innovation Hub

FOR POLITECNICO DI MILANO
The value of the Lecco Innovation Hub project lies in the creation of an interchange and exchange network between businesses, the city of Lecco, and the Polytechnic, which develops and sets up a series of research and communication activities aimed at re-launching the local economy. The laboratory ship and the exhibition hall set up on the floating platform have both been built and outfitted with the help of local companies, by making the most of their technical and manufacturing skills. This process, which continues today, is helping to develop new working relationships between the various players, creating at the same time product and process innovation within the companies and also the ability to transfer know-how between them and the Polytechnic. Among the various facilities that go to make up the Lecco Innovation Hub (the experimental laboratory, sited within the Lecco Campus, which is dedicated to different research areas and designed to be able to react quickly to any integration and evolution, and the floating laboratory, a platform for Knowledge Interchange, which is fundamental for the creation of a new brand identity for the city of Lecco), the laboratory ship merits a special mention. A 10 metre long sailing yacht, it is equipped with instrumentation for the recording of data on the performance of the yacht and its various components, which are essential for a scientific approach to design. There are only three other similar vessels in the world with these capabilities, located at Boston’s MIT, Berlin’s Technical University and the Kanazawa Institute of Technology in Japan. The boat has been designed and created to act as a dynamometrical measuring device, and allows the gathering of new data relating to the aerodynamic and hydrodynamic loads acting on the yacht on a real-life scale, as well as loads acting on other components of the sailing structure. It also allows the geometric forms taken by the sails in authentic working conditions to be studied while actually navigating. The possibility of finding out more about the effective distribution of pressure acting on the whole sail element is of great interest to those involved in the aerodynamic and structural design of sails themselves, as well as having an input into the choice and best use of materials and production techniques.
