LA VITA PRIVATA DEGLI OGGETTI SOVIETICI
BY GIAN PIERO PIRETTO
FOR SIRONI EDITORE
The gazirovka (the public distributor of carbonated water), the papirosy (poor quality cigarettes), the nomerok (the "ticket system" for numbering coats), the gigeničeskaja bumaga (the people’s toilet paper: almost impossible to find). These are some of the 25 items that feature in La vita privata degli oggetti sovietici: an original story told by Gian Piero Piretto that sheds new light on the world that was once behind the Iron Curtain. A teacher of Russian Culture at the University of Milan, Piretto does not focus on the stories and anecdotes of unusual objects, such as those that are often found in the flea markets that survived the collapse of the USSR, but simple and commonplace everyday objects: small things which for decades anchored the material life of Russian citizens, influencing the habits of everyday life or making up for the needs arising from what was to be the great workshop of authentic socialism. Combining the author’s personal experiences with literary, artistic and film quotes, the volume puts together 25 journeys that do not just describe the past but also reflect on the present of these objects, their uses and their traces in the collective imagination and habits of society. He thus gives us an unusual portrait of a world, the Soviet Union, so far away at times as to appear surprisingly close.
