Typography thesis that, starting from the
concept of pictogram and non-alphabetic language, looks
back over history to understand the origins of the first
dingbat characters (graphic ornaments) and the new
graphic and communication possibilities offered by the
evolution of OpenType format applied to the development
of these fonts. The historical/critical section is followed
by a discussion of applied research. In support of the
study a dingbat font was designed based on the Isotype
system designed by the Austrian teacher and philosopher
Otto Neurath. Through making use of OpenType features
it extends its useful range, according to contemporary
needs and possibilities.
