IL RIFIUTO DEGLI DÈI

FOR GIULIO EINAUDI EDITORE
Even those art forms that are clearly industrialized and mass produced with a view to functional use and a market strategy can also act as sources for the creation of forms, sensations and feelings, just like the traditional arts: what has changed are the design models and the distribution of the products. Based on this central idea, Maurizio Vitta the author of Il rifiuto degli dèi, creates a comprehensive and engaging map of contemporary arts. Carrying out a careful analysis of the new expressive models and aesthetic domains generated by the development of technology, the theoretical text comes to reflect on the state of increasing complexity in the production of works of art and the different attitudes of the recipients of the works themselves. Opening with an overview of the birth of the industrial arts in the modern era, the paper analyzes the spreading of attitudes of either rejection or acceptance by “official” culture in terms of contemporary art then describes the relationship of the latter with technology. It goes on to examine the transformation of the figure of the author in this context and goes in depth into the complex interaction between the work itself and the customer. In the light of these innovations already in widespread use around the world, the author calls for a careful reflection on the need for a renewal of the aesthetic culture that marks our times.
