CONSTANCY AND CHANGE IN KOREAN TRADITIONAL CRAFT
BY ORIGONI STEINER ARCHITETTI ASSOCIATI
FOR KOREA CRAFT & DESIGN FOUNDATION
Preparation for the exhibition at the Milan
Triennale of a collection of various types of Korean
artifacts (cabinets, dishes, pottery, bells for worship,
fabrics...) all hand-made and signed by 21 artists.
The relationship between craftsmanship and modernity
and the material nature of the collection were the
starting point for the exhibition design. The display path is
un-programmed and the reading of the works is based on
aesthetic and emotional rather than chronological or
thematic criteria; the arrangement of objects following the
principles of Feng Shui, according to which there is a
relationship between natural elements and the cardinal
points. Over ninety suspended canvases are arranged so as
to even out the space, enclose the exhibition areas, and
spread the natural light coming from the hall’s large
skylights. At sunset, natural light is replaced by theatre
projectors that give the show a different aspect
characterized by the dominance of shadows and
concentrated reflections.
