Prototype of a bicycle frame in “superlaminated”
wood and carbon fibre. By taking advantage of the
tremendous resistance of carbon fibre, it has been possible to
build a structure with a shape and sections that would have
been impossible using only wood, while maintaining a low
weight and great strength. The frame is made by layering
sheets of American Ash and Sapele mahogany and 400 g/m²
biaxial carbon layers with fibres cross-laid at 45° and fixed
with epoxy resin. The normal stress and bending is elastically
absorbed by the materials while the frame splits at the rear
section to create the “housing” in order to make room for the
wheel. The steering tube is made from a block of solid
mahogany inside which a carbon tube is fixed. The rear
dropouts for holding the wheel are made from a slab of Ergal
anchored to the frame by means of four stainless steel screws
sandwiched by a wooden strip that prevents flaking of the
plates from the action of the screws.
