Contrary to common belief, for honey bees living conditions in cities are often better than those in the country, where the current use of pesticides due to industrialized agriculture makes it difficult for them to survive. Evidence of this is the growing number of beekeepers who choose to place their hives on the roofs of buildings in large cities. The basic idea behind Apiarium is drawn from this and through the addition of a hive to a planter, transforms an ordinary piece of furniture for public spaces in a real urban microhabitat. The transformation is visually and formally underlined by a faceted element that stands out in the basic outline of the planter / hive. The project also has a cultural and social value, intended to revitalize underused or degraded areas of the city with the installation of these hives. Through coordination by Public Administration authorities, the local population would be invited to learn the basic techniques of beekeeping, and then continue to take care of the bees and enjoy the honey production. In this way the project aims to provide citizens with a productive and environmentally responsible pastime, capable at the same time of strengthening social and neighborhood ties.
